Because the record is the easy part. The amount also covers the monitoring of the renewal year by year, the notice before maturity, the statement given and the documentation of ownership and credentials. A forgotten domain costs much more than the difference.
You can, each with its annual value. It makes sense for variations that people type wrong often, or for a second brand of the same company. Registration dozens just in case is an annual cost that no one will review later.
The platform goes off the air and the e-mail stops working -- both at once, because they both depend on the same address. Once it has expired, the domain is blocked for a period and can be free again for anyone to register. It is exactly the scenario that the monitoring of renewal exists to avoid.
